In an exclusive interview with GQ India, Priyanka Chopra talks about her budding music career and her plans for the future.
GQ: You released a music single recently. How did that happen?
Priyanka Chopra: I loved jamming with my buddies Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Sulaiman while they composed music in the studios for my films. So the inclination towards music was always there. Then, Universal and Desi Hits in New York approached me with an offer to cut an album. They believed in me more than I did in myself.
GQ: You want to make it in Hollywood, too. You recently hired an agent.
PC: My career has always been something that happened to me. I didn’t push myself to get into film or music. The Creative Artists Agency [CAA] in Los Angeles approached me about managing my work. If something interesting comes up, I’ll do it.
GQ: Are you the most hated woman in Bollywood?
PC: I believe I’m interesting and that’s why I get spoken about. I think the gossip around me is a result of the fact that I’m a very private person. I just won’t discuss my personal life in the media.
GQ: But there’s never been a better time to be an actor at home. There are some interesting films being green lit.
PC: True. Mr [Amitabh] Bachchan said something in a very early interview, and I’ve built my career on it:
“The amount of time you’re on the screen doesn’t matter. What matters is what you do when you’re on the screen.” I was only part of eight scenes in Kaminey, but they were impactful.
GQ: Are you single?
PC: I’m not married.
GQ: Which means you’re single?
PC: I’m not married [laughs].
