Hindi television these days tends to consist of two things – saas-bahu serials and reality shows. But along the years, there have been some truly iconic shows that brought the entire family together – some still air on television, while the others live on in our memories of good times gone by. To celebrate World Television Day, I’m sharing with you ten iconic Hindi television shows – make sure to add your favourites in the comments!
1. Hip Hip Hurray
Hip Hip Hurray is heralded as one of the first shows to focus on issues plaguing the younger generation – it tackled career, heartbreak, school life in a sensitive manner.
2. Dekh Bhai Dekh
The story of Dekh Bhai Dekh focus on three generations of one family and the trials and tribulations that they went through.

Regarded as one of the funniest Indian sitcoms, Hum Paanch revolved around Anand Mathur and his five daughters, who each had a distinct personality and came together to carry out some plan on every episode.
4. Office Office
Mussadilal, Pankaj Kapoor‘s character in Office Office, is one of the most iconic in Hindi television. Each episode of this show featured Mussadilal’s struggles against corruption and bribery. It later spawned the film Chalo Mussaddi Office Office.
5. Khichdi
Speaking of shows that spawned films – the wildly popular family show Khichdi also inspired a movie by the title Khichdi: The Movie.
6. Antakshari
The singing reality show that kicked off all singing reality shows: Antakshari with Annu Kapoor ran for over ten years and was one of the most popular TV shows. Remember the Deewane, Parwaane and Mastaane teams?

Probably the baap of all saas-bahu shows on television, KSBKBT was Asia’s most watched serial between the years 2000 and 2008. It’s practically impossible to think the name of this TV show without having the theme song playing in your head.
8. CID
CID is the longest running television show in India, featuring the iconic ACP Pradyuman and inspectors Abhijeet and Daya, just to name a few. It’s also the source of some hilarious lines, my favourite of which is, “Daya, darwaaza tod do!”
9. Kaun Banega Crorepati

The game show inspired by Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? first started up in 2000, then returned in 2005 after a four-year hiatus. It has continued since then and is still one of the most popular shows on television.

Karan Johar is known for two things – his network within the industry and his ability to suss out information. These two come together to create quite the cracker of the show, Koffee With Karan, which is the number one place to find celebs admitting things they normally wouldn’t.
