Designer Rina Dhaka launched her Urban Tribe Collection in Delhi over the weekend and, added her signature oomph to the Indian design iconography. “It’s all about the past turning into present, rustic into chic and hand techniques into digital,” she reveals.
Rina Dhaka takes heritage forward, enriching it with her inimitable style, and soft sensual appeal. She has traveled through India extensively using intricate tribal embroidery from the regions of Bhuj, and some made in the heartland of Uttar Pradesh, rearranging them in her New Delhi atelier to make for some dazzling silhouettes.
Tribal motifs, and the vibrant mirror work of Bhuj, get recreated in the form of prints as Rina superimposes them with a vintage looking lattice motif in sequin. Dreamy chiffons combine with cotton tulle, nets, and satin to blend in fitted forms with controlled volume. A sense of transparency with decorous highlights in thread embroidery gives the collection its peek-a-boo appeal.
Spotted at the Fall/Winter 2012 preview were Farookh Abdullah, Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar,
Raseel Gujral and Naveen Ansal, Ritu Beri, and actress Sonal Chohan, who was Rina’s celebrity show-stopper!
