After playing keys with a bunch of bands all over India and dabbling in production for a couple of documentaries, I decided to study it last year, at one of London’s music production colleges: Point Blank. Apart from some incredible tutors at the school, the music scene in London with its thousands of venues and millions of musicians/producers/DJs/composers/sound designers and tech geeks (etc!) shared an equal part in my learning experience. I was exposed to some strange and beautiful sounds, and had the opportunity to pick up on several tips n’ tricks of the trade.
Here are some of the ones I found particularly shocking!
– A perfectly well produced album (with a legit release) where all of the vocals had been recorded on an iPhone as ‘voice memos’. You wouldn’t even be able to tell that they were recorded in a car and not in some fancy studio’s live room.
– A couple of rock albums by established bands (namely U2 and Metallica) have recorded their vocals in the mixing room – on Shure SM58s, with the rest of the track blaring on the studio monitors behind them (!)
– Not everyone works to a grid. I was suitably impressed when collaborating with a producer who didn’t believe in using the grid on his DAW at all, whatsoever. His rhythms/grooves/tempo etc were all mathematically (magically) in place. (?)
– And the one which made the most sense: “It’s amazing what can be accomplished when nobody cares who takes the credit” – Great advice inside the studio, and out! I’m now doing live/electronica + EDM out of Bombay and looking forward to releasing an EP this
September.
