Actor Aamir Khan features on the most recent Asia edition of Time magazine, with a blurb that asks, “Can an actor change a nation?”
Aamir’s show, Satyamev Jayate, highlights social issues such as female foeticide, child sexual abuse, dowry, and others. He’s had his detractors, and some people have suggested that the show is not entirely selfless (he earns a record setting 3 crores per episode), but either way Satyamev Jayate has shed light on important issues, and has certainly made an impact. The show prompted government action on handicapped children, encouraged a Health Minister to march for female foeticide awareness, and even influenced the Lok Sabha to pass a child protection bill.
So what do you think – can an actor change a nation? I don’t know the answer to that – but if someone can, it would most likely be Aamir Khan.
