I am entirely convinced that if only Karan Johar would speak to me, he’d realize we’re destined to be BFFs. I love his type of cinema – from his larger-than-life films to his romantic comedies, I’ve liked almost every film that has come out of the Dharma Productions banner. Of course, I have my favourites, so for his birthday, here are five of my top Dharma films.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Karan Johar’s first directorial venture, and what a film it was. One of my absolute favourites – I can sit here and quote several portions of the film for you if you’d let me.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Coming out with a second film is tricky business after your first film has been so well-received – there’s so much pressure to produce a hit. However, KJo delivered a second hit, and we loved it so much we did a two minute movie on it.
Kal Ho Naa Ho
KJo took a break from directing here and handed the reins over from Nikhil Advani. He did, however, write the script of the movie – and it’s perhaps only KJo who could make me laugh so hard (first half of the film) and also cry a river (second half) in the same film.
Dostana
One of my favourite movies of recent times. The film uses the same title as Dharma Productions’ first film in 1980, but it couldn’t be more different. Simultaneously funny, raunchy and entertaining – this film puts itself firmly on the ‘favourites’ list.
Wake Up Sid
I could gush about this film forever, but it wouldn’t be enough. Such a sweet, simple movie that worms its way into your heart so easily. Love everything about this film, from the story to the characters to the music.
