This weekend, if you don’t already have any major plans, head over to St. Xavier’s College (Mumbai) to view a photography exhibition with a difference! Each one of the photos on display have been taken by ten children, aged between 10 – 16 years, who were visually impaired and have undergone treatment to restore their sight as best as possible.
Organised by Sightsavers, a global development organisation working to eliminate avoidable blindness, this event is called Through Different Eyes and aims to sensitize sighted people to the challenges that blind people face every day in their environment. The ten children underwent a workshop in photography organised by Sightsavers. Even though some of them were partially sighted, they were taught the basics of handling a digital camera and photography through interactive sessions that included a mix of classroom as well as outdoor shoots. The outcome has been a set of brilliant pictures full of colour and expression. A collection of almost forty photographs will be displayed at the event.
There will also be an Experience Zone, which is an interactive zone intended to break myths around blindness and create awareness regarding the daily challenges a visually impaired person can face. The event will also aim to raise awareness about eye care – the fact that most eye conditions are avoidable and easily treated, and to emphasize that visually impaired people can overcome any challenge, with support from society.
