As we promised, we got in touch with Lisa Haydon as soon as we announced the winners of our Sher Singh contest. The 5 lucky winners get their fashion questions answered by the stunner herself. She confessed that she was most candid with her answers as she felt that was the best policy when dealing with fashion questions. I have to agree with her, the truth about clothes and how to dress is the best advice, that’s why I always take my harshest and closest critic/friend when I go shopping! Let’s check out what Lisa has to say!
Psst! Winners I hope you’re excited to read your answers! I know I am.
Lisa Says: Congrats on your new job, you will absolutely love NYC… AMAZING!! Working in a financial firm it will be greatly appreciated if you show up in suits & formal attire. Dressing this way need not be boring, sticking with neutral colors is a great idea as it is just so chic. Aside from just black and white you also have the option on tan, beige, grey, charcoal, and even deep purple. There are so many options out there and if I were you I would have a bit of fun playing up the androgyny factor. You could try high waist pencil skirts teamed with silk or cotton Victorian blouses or bohemian ones that are looser and a little more flowy tucked in. In fact the Serena top from my Lisa loves Sher Singh collection would go beautifully tucked in. These skirts are also great for dinners out. Perhaps you could try purchasing a few thicker legging type trousers… slim fit pants have been trendy for awhile and are easily available in Zara and H&M.
My collection online, Lisa Haydon for Sher Singh stocks a beautiful dress as well that will make for a stylish yet corporate statement. The Dakota dress for example comes in both subtle and neutral colors. For shoes you could try some block heeled boots for winter or pumps with block heels for summer. I suggest block heels or wedges as they are just comfier to wear all day at work. If you are not a heels person (much like myself) then ballerina flats are a great alternative. Investing in a few well fitted blazers would be a smart thing. These will keep you warm in winter and also complete your corporate look. Make sure your blazers are appropriate for your body type… slim fitting around the waist if you have and hour glass figure or straight cut is better if your waist tends to be your problem zone. Seeing as you are moving in June you will need some summer clothes. NYC can get so hot during that time. A few summer dresses that can be worn in the day or in the night will fix you up for your social life and grab a few accessories that can dress you up for your balmy dinners out. Have fun! xx
Lisa Says: Hi Princess, What a gorgeous name! And how blessed to have an hour glass figure. Maxis are some of my favourite dresses. You could try a denim jacket and high waist belt with your maxi dress and pop on some tan colour wedges to stretch the height a little. Jumpsuits are so cute, again a pair of wedges will suit this best or espadrilles are so sexy right now… love them! Buy accessories that really resonate with the person that you are. I don’t accessorize that much but when I see something that is really special I’ll pick it up. Try to buy cool different pieces. This will give your look a very personal and interesting point of view that no one has seen before.
Lisa Says: Hey Kanika, LBD’s are classic and elegant and depending on the one you choose, they can also cover a multitude of sins. Black is a girls best friend! Why don’t you try an LBD that is made of a beautiful flowy fabric that cuts of above knee length. You can cinch it with a belt on your upper or lower waist. This will help conceal your stomach… this is actually my secret trick when I’ve been over eating or have a bit of holiday weight on. If you have beautiful shoulders then choose a dress that is halter or a ‘V’ neck cut if you have bigger shoulders. A ‘V’ neck will go beautifully with a show piece necklace. In fact an LBD will look great with any one piece of outstanding/ show piece jewelry. Have fun strutting it with that LBD sista x
Lisa Says: Hey Chica, You gotta get on the abdominal crunches hey… they will work wonders. Our dresses on the Sher Singh website are fantastically appropriate for all body types. Stick with our darker hues as they have a slimming effect. So glad you are excited to experiment with all our new pieces. Depending on your personality type would I choose the shoes. Heels always give off a sophisticated woman about town look whilst ballet flats are more high street bohemian. I always tend towards the graffiti ballet flats and seeing as you are 5”6’ you have sufficient height to dabble with flat shoes. If you are opting with our slim line dresses then go with the heels and for our more day out girly boho flowy styles then go with the flats. Wedges are a great middle compromise. Don’t forget to hit the dance floor when out at night… its the best way to work your way into the Susan trousers and fitted jumpsuits.
Lisa Says: Awww Dolly, I hear ya. I never had much pocket money growing up either. It’s tough reinventing your wardrobe constantly but this will turn you into a wonderfully creative dresser… a quality only few people possess. I would start by taking those gorgeous salwar scarves and using them as belts through jeans or just throwing them on with capris and a top. Mix it up! Take your salwar pants and wear them with tank tops and other boho looking blouses. You can buy wooden bangles for not a lot of money and accessorize with them. Street shop in bandra or colaba causeway… they often have great stuff.
Dressing up need not cost any money at all. I would suggest reading or browsing fashion magazines and seeing how they take clothes from all different styles and stick them together to make a cool look. Recycled fashion is referred to as vintage which is possibly the most popular fashion trend right now. I can’t see your wardrobe, so therefore I cannot specifically tell you how to mix and match but spend an afternoon in a book shop just browsing the fashion magazines so you can get ideas on just how much you can do with what you have in your wardrobe. Sending you inspiration and playfull energy to invent and reinvent! x
