Till yesterday, I used to be in advertising. Till yesterday, I used to write penny poetry which were set to tunes. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it. With its clichés and caricature personalities. And I lived that life. For over a decade.
Today, I have traded in my pencil for a camera.
That’s because, today, I am looking at making myself happy. Today, I want to earn my living by doing something that I have always loved. I want to take pictures.
I love images. As a child I had a scrapbook where sunsets in faraway lands, meadows, birds, flowers, bridges all would come together with a little bit of glue on pink sheets. I walked around with my father’s old Yashica hanging around my neck. In pursuit of the next ground-breaking event that I would need to record for posterity.
With time, I moved on from flowers and birds to a more exotic species. Women.
I fell in love uninterruptedly and repeatedly. And as I continued to point my camera at them, I became more and more enamoured by what they had to offer.
Today, as I turn photographer, I am as grateful as I am happy. Grateful to everyone who very willingly became the subjects of my experiments with light. Grateful to the clients who chose to recognize passion over credentials. Grateful to my family and my loved ones who encouraged me and made this possible.
Today as I turn photographer, I am excited. But mostly, terrified. But that is a good thing, is it not?
Streets of London: London is a fascinating city. And I wanted to profile the metropolis not through the oft seen landmarks, but through the citizens who inhabit it. I walked for over 14 hours a day. And I think I got what I wanted.
In Calcutta: I spent my formative years in Calcutta. Seems strange, but it took a derelict, dying city to teach me how to truly appreciate beauty. And I remain eternally grateful.
Women: I love women. I have always believed them to be superior species. And it doesn’t matter how much we try and record their beauty. It will never be enough.
Portraits: There exists a duality within us all. And I always try to reveal that what is not on the surface. Isn’t that why pictures are called exposures?
