The Zanjeer remake has been in the news lately, firstly because Priyanka Chopra confirmed she’s doing the film and secondly because of Mahie Gill‘s item number. However, while director Amit Mehra seems to have made great plans for this film, he overlooked one thing – getting proper permission from the writers of the original Zanjeer, Salim-Javed. Here’s what Javed Akhtar had to say about it.
Javed Akhtar says: “There is something besides a copyright, about which no one talks and that is moral rights. It is not to be changed. If you buy an artist’s painting and put it up in your house, you cannot change the content of the painting. The moral rights of the painting remains with the artist. Similarly, if you have taken the script, the writer has the moral right over it. You cannot make changes in it without the writer’s consent or permission.”
Apparently, Amit Mehra went to Salim and Javed asking them for permission to remake the film, and Salim-Javed told him that they should sit down and officially discuss the matter. However, Amit Mehra never sat down with him and later went to the media claiming he had gotten clearance. Hence, Salim-Javed have hired a legal team to deal with copyright issues.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens with this one!
