Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) and India’s leading designer, Narendra Kumar recently announced India’s first ever Cool Japan Festival at High Street Phoenix, Mumbai from 16th to 18th March 2012, as part of 60th Anniversary of Japan-India Diplomatic Relations.
A Cool Japan theme party was hosted by the Japanese Ministry with Narendra Kumar at Canvas, Palladium on Thursday night.
Here are a ten things we loved and enjoyed at the special preview:

A Geisha girl in full costume performs the traditional fan dance
MissMalini with the Geisha performer

1) Traditional Fan Dance by a Geisha: Though this girl was a novice and in training to be a Geisha, she entertained the crowds with the traditional fan dance. I particularly loved her kimono and her platform sandals.

Origami

2) Origami: Even though I was intrigued by the intricate origami on display, I was most fascinated by the genial gentleman who created the paper designs. He proudly sat behind his counter with the flags of India and Japan stuck-under his eyes. And his smile was so Zen-like, it was impossible not to feel a surge of affection for him.

Toy Robots

3) Toy Robots: Anyone who grew up watching Giant Robot on Indian Television (back in the 80’s) would be fascinated by toy robots. And there were a wide variety on display.

Cartoon T’shirts

4) Cartoon T-Shirts: Who doesn’t like cartoon graphics on tees? I love these in vibrant colours and some of them had some cute designs of little piglets masquerading as pandas! Adorable!

Salt-n-Pepper Shakers

5) Salt-n-Pepper Shakers: These salt-n-pepper shakers of Japanese women in kimonos add a dollop of style to any dining table.

Wadaiko Drums

6) Wadaiko Drums: These huge drums were played by twelve performers and if you are a fan of drum-and-bass, this is a must-see on your next visit to Japan.

Robots

7) Robots: The future of India and one for every household, when the Japanese start selling them in India in the near future.

Sushi Counter

8) Sushi: What is a Japanese event without sushi? They were serving crab, salmon and vegetarian sushi on a mini conveyor belt. Quite chic!

Dragon Dancers

9) Dragon Dancers: Dragon dances are performed during big festivals and public occasions, like the new year. It was interesting to see them perform, live!

Giselli Monteiro

10) Giselli Monteiro: The stunning South American beauty was the star of Narendra Kumar’s showing. She’s also modeled in his Japan calendar. She looked beautiful in this Narendra Kumar creation.
