If you grew up in the 90s the voices you were most familiar with in Hindi films were Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. It’s outrageously difficult to shortlist Narayan’s top 50 songs let alone top 10, so here’s a look at just a few of his very popular songs.
Papa Kehte Hai – Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak
Nepalese singer Narayan made his foray into the land of playback singing with the film Unees Bees in 1980 but his big break came when he sang for Aamir Khan in this song which became synonymous with both Aamir & Narayan.
Pehla Nasha – Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
Narayan has sung for all the Khans in particular Aamir & Shah Rukh Khan for whom he became their singing “voice” throughout the 90s.
Jadoo Teri Nazar – Darr
Jaane Kyon – Dil Chahta Hai
Till date Narayan has won National Awards for this song along with Mitwa from Lagaan and Yeh Taara Woh Taara from Swades.
E Ajnabi – Dil Se
Mitwa – Lagaan
Besides his passion for singing Narayan has even acted in two Nepali films including Kusume Rumal, which was a huge box office success.
Chand Chupa Badal Mein – Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
Narayan’s son Aditya started his career in Bollywood at a young age when he first sang in the film Akele Hum Akele Tum and is now hosting shows on television like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa & X Factor India, along with pursuing an acting career.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Main Yahan Hoon – Veer Zaara
Narayan received the Padma Shri award in 2009 and has received the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu in Nepal which is the highest possible honor given to a civilian. Team MissMalini wishes Udit Narayan a very Happy Birthday!
