I always knew Puss In Boots deserved his own movie. We loved him in his swashbuckling cameo in Shrek back in 2004 and now he’s back in a lovable Western with more furry feline friends by his side.
Puss In Boots is a laugh riot all the way and I decided I want to tell you guys the five most adorable (and purrfect) things to watch out for in this engaging and beautifully constructed ride of a lifetime.
1) Our favorite Outlaw
As the funny but vain Spanish cat in high-heeled musketeer boots, Antonio Banderas is just awesome. Watching Puss flamenco dancing with feisty cat burglar, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) is delightful. The Zorro-like cat is the perfect ‘ lover’, a skilled swordsman who gulps down milk from shot glasses and chases lights (to stay true to his cattiness). It’s all just so adorable. If you’re a cat lover, this is SO your movie.
2) Mushy Mash Up
The chaotic junmble of Nursery rhyme characters like Humpty Alexander Dumpty (did you know he had a middle name), Jack and Jill (they’re not siblings but a married couple who can’t make up their mind about having babies and put nappies on piglets instead), Jack and the Beanstalk, the Golden eggs and Mother Goose seemed a little lame, almost annoying at first.
But, as the movie progresses, you find their antics increasingly hilarious and that’s when you know you can watch out for a sequel.
3) Crackling Visual Drama
The 3D from Dreamworks is bright, colourful, pays great attention to detail and is truly spectacular. And the adults will love the goofy visuals just as much as the kids. So, if you’re into great animation that just makes you want to reach out and give that cat which says ‘Oooooh’ a giant hug (watch out for her, she’s my favorite character in the movie), then you’re in for a fun, filmic treat.
4) Clawing His Way into Our Hearts
The humor does stray into adult territory remotely which might be a tad alarming for Moms and Dads. And even though the main plot about the magic beans that Puss is in search of doesn’t seem compelling enough, our Casanova cat (with the most endearing eyes) carries the movie on his shoulders.
My heart goes out to him as he tries to find the golden goose eggs which lie in the giant’s castle, save the city, clear his name and win back the love of the quaint little people at San Ricardo.
The flashback which takes you back to when Humpty (voiced by Zach Galifianakis ) and Puss were childhood friends and the betrayal angle has a beautiful emotional connect and helped me relate to the characters better.
5) The Cool Cat
The moral undertone of the movie makes it a great family entertainer. And though I am not a fan of the egg jokes, I really believe that the groovy soundtrack, the superbly shot dance-off with Kitty and Puss, the dramatic twists and turns and kickass action make it one of the funkiest animation movies this year.
Ah… that cute feathered cap, those killer boots and Antonio Banderas with his mesmerizing dialogue and the perfect (sexy) Spanish accent make Puss the most lovable cat ever.
He’s so much more than just a flabby Shrek sidekick. Watch out for Puss In Boots, which is not just another Shrek spinoff but a treasure house of sparkling wit, unforgettable charm and magical visuals.
