This weekend, December 3rd 2011, the world renowned skateboarding champion Tony Hawk, will be performing at BKC in Mumbai. He has been brought to India by Quiksilver, the sporty fashion brand.
Here is what he has to say about his first trip to India, fashion, gaming and of course, skateboarding:
What are you looking forward to experience when you are here in Mumbai, this weekend (December 2nd and 3rd)?
The famous fashion brand, Quiksilver asked if I would come skate in celebration of their store opening in Mumbai, and I immediately said yes. It will be the first professional skateboard exhibition in India and I am proud to be part of it. I look forward to showing the people of India what is possible on a skateboard, to meet the skaters of Mumbai, and to enjoy the country with my friends. It is a very exciting opportunity.
What is your personal, everyday style?
I try to keep it “Cool” without trying too hard! (*Smiles*)
What are your other favourite sports, apart from skateboarding?
I don’t get to follow other sports as I barely have time to keep up with all of the skate events!
Can you elaborate on your association with Quiksilver?
They have been my clothing sponsor for the last ten years, and they produce Hawk Clothing (which is my line of youth clothing).
Tell us a bit about the Tony Hawk Foundation, the skate parks they have built and the work they do for the kids from not so privileged backgrounds?
My foundation helps to build public skateparks in low-income areas. We have given away over $4 million and helped to build nearly 500 skateparks so far. It is rewarding work, and it helps to keep at-risk youth out of trouble.
You started at a very young age and seem to be going extremely strong on that even now? What keeps you going at the age of 43?
The idea that there are still new techniques to learn, and that there are blossoming opportunities to show skateboarding to people who have never seen or appreciated it.
You have enjoyed a long and a successful career? What was the highpoint of the journey?
I hope the highpoint is yet to come, but landing the first 900 at the X-Games was definitely a big moment for me. It marked the end of my competitive career and the resolution of years of failed attempts trying to land that trick.
Can you talk about your new game, Tony Hawk: Shred?
It is a board-controlled game that features skating and snowboarding. It makes you feel like you are really doing the tricks from the safety of your room. The board is very responsive and the game is physically exciting.
What is your advice to those who are just beginning to learn skateboarding? Any advice/tips you can share?
Take it slow, learn the basics and don’t get too frustrated with yourself. Only do it if you truly enjoy it.
How do you like to unwind after a days’ training etc?
By playing with my kids.
