It’s the disco king Bappi Lahiri’s brithday today and what better way to celebrate than to take a look at some of his biggest hits!
I Am A Disco Dancer – Disco Dancer
It’s impossible to talk about the Hindi film industry in the 1980s and not bring up the names Bappi Lahiri and Mithun Chakraborty, who led the disco era and produced multiple hits together, including this one!
Raat Baki Baat Baki – Namak Halal
Beside composing Lahiri was also a playback singer for many of his songs while most of his collaborations were with Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle & Usha Uthup.
Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja – Disco Dancer
This song was so immensely successful that it was re-recorded my international bands. M.I.A recorded her version of the song in her 2007 album Kala and it was used in the Adam Sandler flick You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.
Chalte Chalte – Chalte Chalte (1976)
This song is one of Lahiri’s most melodious compositions and one of Kishore Kumar’s biggest hits.
Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re – Saaheb
Lahiri’s trademark sunglasses, gold bling and tracksuits are so synonymous with the disco king that it’s hard to imagine he has anything else in his wardrobe.
Zooby Zooby – Dance Dance
The music of this film was inspired by the Italo disco and especially by artists such as Modern Talking, this song was one of Alisha Chinai’s biggest hits.
Inteha Ho Gai Intezar Ki – Shaarabi
Lahiri won his first and only Filmfare Award for the film Shaarabi in 1985.
Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezar – Aitbaar
When you think of Bappi Lahiri the word ghazal is the last thing that comes to mind but he has been responsible for a few notable ghazals like this one sung by Bhupinder & Asha Bhosle.
Thoda Resham Lagta Hai – Jyoti
While Lahiri had been accused of stealing the tunes of many songs thorughout his career there was a slight twist in the story when R&B singer Truth Hurts used part of this song in her super-hit track Addictive. As expected Lahiri sued the music label for using the track without his permission.
Ooh La La – The Dirty Picture
This song is still fairly new but it’s really caught on and has become quite popular, the tune is catchy isn’t it? It’s even being used for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show promo on Zee Cafe.
