Even though Karva Chauth has been a major part of cinema in the past, the 90s were huge especially in terms of the glamour quotient that was added to the festival. We want you to bring in the special day (s0 you don’t think about food too much) with a collection of our favorite Karva Chauth songs and scenes. Also a little sprinkling of songs about the moon… coz we know spotting it is the best part about the night! So happy listening (and fasting.)
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun
So, it all began with Suraj Barjatya’s mega blockbuster with one of the most magical on screen pair, Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit.
*Karva Chauth for the uninitiated; is an annual one-day festival celebrated by Hindu and some Sikh women in North India and parts of Pakistan in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. (No kidding!) Once the moon is visible it is customary for a fasting woman to view its reflection in a vessel filled with water, through a sieve.
The movie depicted Karva Chauth as a grand family celebration and not just a private ceremony for lovers. And that’s what made it so special.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
This one tops my list of favorite Karva Chauth scene movies! How can we ever get over Simran aka Kajol’s adorable nakhras when she fasted and Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) also staying hungry for her the entire day… Aww, we all secretly wish our guys would do that.
And then how she pretends to faint so Raj can feed her! Romance at its best.
And they even have the lovely traditional song Ghar Aaja Pardesi… when all the women come together with diyas and there’s a beautiful reflection of the moon in the water scene shot so beautifully. The movie made girls all over the country just totally fall in love with the idea of fasting for love.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan were a couple deeply in love when this movie was shot. And in the flick, Ash’s character actually dreams about her lover Salman and fasts for him and not for her husband Ajay Devgan.
So, apart from DDLJ, here was another movie that reinforced the idea of unmarried girls fasting for their guys and singing lovey-dovey songs about the moon. It doesn’t matter if you’re married or not.. if you’ve found true love and you care enough to do this.. this is your day!
Ishq Vishq
Amrita Rao and Shahid Kapoor shared the most adorable Karva Chauth scene in recent times in this one. I love that whole ‘girl next door’ thing that Amrita had going and the way she expresses her love for Shahid in a heart wrenching scene.
With her beautiful and sacrificial modern day love saga, she totally makes new age girls want to revisit tradition, fasting and other things so important to our culture.
And don’t we just love days when we can dress up and wear some ethnic clothes. God…I wonder what we’d do without the awesome Indian saree, Salwar kameez, lehenga-choli and a billion other outfits we invented! We rule.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Karan Johar movies are real good when it comes to celebrations! And the Karva Chauth scene in the movie with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor (looking so frickin’ hot) just made Karva Chauth the most fashionable thing to do! And yet again, Kajol and SRK rocked the Karva Chauth song with their lovable chemistry.
Trust KJo to shoot the festival of love in style..with the mehendi, a song as beautiful as Bole Chudiyan and some pretty fun dance steps… basically everything that makes it such a joy!
From being an occasion for married woman in the North of India to pray for their husbands’ long lives, to becoming a hugely popular trend that married and now unmarried women follow across the country, Bollywood has really added the proverbial Chaar Chaand to the beauty and glamour of this day. And taken it from being just a day of suffering for women to a day that truly marks the growing love and bond between partners. Aww… So as I undertake this very mushy fast for my husband… We truly wish that this delightful celebration of love unites your family and adds some color to your lives. Happy Karva Chauth from Team MissMalini!
