You’ve probably heard that vinyl is back. Over the past few years, vinyl sales have been steadily increasing, labels have started manufacturing them again, and friends have started pulling their parents old records (and players) out of dusty boxes. Over in India, vinyl has moved out of Chor Bazaar and is also available at regular music stores. Now Zenzi and NH7 have started a new vinyl club called Microgroove.
It’s a place for people who love music and vinyl to meet, salivate over each other’s collections and play their records. It makes for quite a lovely Sunday afternoon – it’s peaceful, chilled out, the people are nice, the music is good, and there’s discounted beer. You can’t really ask for more.
Each month, they feature a specific type of music – it’s gone from Dylan to punk – and this Sunday, it’s jazz. Along with the music, jazz critic Sunil Sampat will play a curated set from his personal collection and Sony Music will be giving away a Miles Davis vinyl. There are also tables where you can sell, buy, or trade your vinyl.
Funny story – I went to the first edition of Microgroove in April, and was asked to pick the winner of the free vinyl (everyone puts their name on a piece of paper in a ‘lil box, and I had to pick one from there). Horrifyingly, and mortifyingly, I PICKED MY OWN NAME. I was most embarrassed, mumbled something about it being my own name, and to escape being called a ‘cheater’, quickly pulled out someone else’s name. However, now that I think about it, it was all fair-and-square. I should’ve gone home with that record. Sigh.

So if you have any jazz records, bring them over, and if haven’t started collecting records, it’s all good, just come on by. I’m carrying along a book, am going to find a spot by the window, and happily read to some Ella.
