The seventies bring back images of the decadent Studio 54 lifestyle, a celebration of the new found nonchalance in dressing up, loose long shapes and eternal songs like Gloria Gaynor’s I will Survive, YMCA, and talented musicians like Simon and Garfunkel, the eclectic Janis Joplin and the Bee Gees.
The original Serena Van Der Woodsen of her times, the fine featured Marisa Berenson was a fixture of the upper east side and one of highest paid models in the world. It was the early seventies and the granddaughter of couturier Elsa Schiaparelli was being groomed for fashion stardom by legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland. She was later featured in many fashion glossies, was muse to Andy Warhol and was seen wearing all the top seventies designers, notably Manhattan’s favourite, Halston.
Halston is a brand known for its minimalism and glamourous designs. The seventies look made a comeback on ramps this Spring Summer 2011, seen at Tom Ford, Chloe, Fendi, D&G, Stella McCartney (this breezy collection is available at Kitsch in Delhi and Mumbai, read more here) and closer home, Anamika Khanna. This look marks the return of wide legged high-waisted pants (which work well even on slightly lower heavy women), elegant blousons, crop tops, maxi skirts and espadrilles. All in all this look is flattering and chic.
You can cop this look for less at Zara, Mango, and Vero Moda stores across the country.
Kiera Knightley is seen pulling this look off to perfection with laid-back flats, a pleated maxi skirt, sling bag and just the right amount of midriff. Let us know what you think of this trend, and watch this space for more on the latest in fashion. xoxo!
