The 2007 comedy Bheja Fry with the lovable geek Bharat Bhushan played by Vinay Pathak is back. The sequel which is Mukul Deora’s maiden venture as a producer is directed by Sagar Ballary. Bheja Fry 2, which was due to release in April got delayed due to last minute production issues. The cast has Kamal Hassan’s ex Sarika who was in the original as well, Minissha Lamba, Kay Kay Menon, Suresh Menon and Amole Gupte (director of Stanley Ka Dabba which is also out this month) in major roles.
In the movie, the nerd Bhushan who is annoyingly adorable manages to realize his dream of becoming a singer. He participates in a reality music show and goes on to win a fancy cruise (big surprise considering his crooning is abysmal) and that’s where plot takes off. His misadventures begin on this crazy chaotic cruise ride which leaves him stranded on an island with this notorious businessman played by Kaykay. Rajat Kapoor and Ranvir Shorey who had important roles in the original movie are not a part of this one but there is however, an interesting character of the tax inspector played by Suresh Menon.
The first look of the movie was released yesterday on television and the Internet. I personally love how Vinay Pathak’s quintessential brand of humor gives this rib tickling comedy an awesome twist. The previews have Twitter-verse celebrities raving about how great the movie looks. Some critics however feel that it might not be as great as the first movie (what is it with sequels, really)? I truly hope that the cute but silly nerd is able to relive the magic of the original. The true strength of a comedy lies in being able to tug at heartstrings making a memorable entertainer with characters we cherish. Can Bheja Fry 2 live up to the challenge?
