I was up at 5:45 this morning, brewing my tea for movie’s big night – The Academy Awards or affectionately known as The Oscars. At around 6 – 6:15 MissMalini started to tweet to me about all the amazing red carpet fashion. Yes, here at MissMalini.com we love our movies and the red carpet! Looking at what the stars were wearing, I found it incredible hard to short list them into just one list. So, I did 3! – The best/worst Dressed Winners, The top 5 best/worst Dressed List and finally my Undecided list!
Best Dressed Winner – Natalie Portman (Best Actress, Black Swan)
Rodarte sure got it right, this dress is very elegant and flattering, and she look very comfortable in it. I don’t know how she can do heels being pregnant, as most pregnant women hate to be in heels, so props to her for that! I love the subtle embroidery around the neckline, it’s a great touch of class.
Jewelry: Platinum and diamond ring by Tiffany & Co.
Worst Dressed Winner – Melissa Leo (Best Supporting Actress, The Fighter)
The problem with this dress isn’t the fabric or the texture, but rather the high neck and boxy sleeves. It makes her look like – a boxer! (Bad joke I know) The Fighter was a great movie, but she shouldn’t have been inspired by the name for her dress choice for the Oscars! Hmm at least she’s an Oscar winner now!
Top 5 Best Dressed List
At no 1 : Gwyneth Paltrow looks like a female Oscar or shall I say an Oscarette? The sequined gold Calvin Klein dress is a simple colum style with plunging neck line. She could have done away with the earrings and the brooch on the belt or gone with a different design. I like the sleek hair and simple make up, an all over a glitzy glamours look.
At no 2 : This little new comer has surprised a lot of people. It’s a very grown up colour on her, but the tea length a-line style of the dress adds that dash of youth and innocence. Rumour has is that she helped design this dress with the designer duo at Marchesa. The best touch was the simple hair band, no big chunky jewellery to age her. Props!
Jewellery: Platinum and 10 carat diamond headband, and a platinum and diamond ring by Fred Leighton.
At no 3: I know you’re thinking I’ve gone awfully wrong here. Yet, only Cate Blanchett could pull off such a fierce dress and make it work. From a fashion perspective this is definitely the winning look of the night, although most Oscar lists will probably slam her for this Givenchy Couture dress. I say it’s a strong look, made elegant with her short hair and simple make up.
At no 4: Halle Berry looked like a dream in this Marchesa dress, and gorgeous Neil Lane diamond earrings. The dressed translated beautifully on stage and actually gave the appearance of movement even when she was sitting!
Jewellery: Platinum and 10 carat diamond drop earrings, and platinum rings with fancy colored diamonds by Neil Lane.
At no 5: Mila Kunis sure turned heads (with the very low neckline) in this Elie Saab lavender dress. It was a great colour for the actress, yet why such a severe face, she looks so much better with a smile. I’m not in love with the hair either, but the dress steals the show!
Jewellery: Platinum and diamond cocktail ring, platinum and diamond line bracelet, platinum and diamond bangle, and platinum and diamond earrings by Neil Lane (30 carats total).
The top 5 Worst Dressed List
At no 1: I don’t know who made Elizabeth Chambers dress, but it’s good it’s unknown, because its terrible. The colour the gloss on the fabric, all of it is a big No. Sorry Armie, you’re lovely to look at but your wife, thats a bit hard to digest!
At no 2: Waist up she looks like she stepped out from the 1950’s. Waist down, don’t even bother looking, it’s too much to bear! The big asymmetrical tutu is just weighing her down and is very un-flattering. There is always next year Marisa Tomei!
At no 3: I’m sure under that horrid Vivienne Westwood brown satin dress is the sexy vamp we know as Helen Miren. Unfortunately the dress looks very home made, and a bit sloppy, especially the puff long sleeves! Good thing she was on stage with Katy Perry’s beau Russel Brand, he snagged all the attention off this monstrosity!
Jewellery: Platinum necklace from 1907 with pearls and diamonds, and a platinum bracelet with diamonds from Cartier’s Archive Museum Collection.
At no 4: Disco Fever! the sequin blue L’wren Scott dress is too much to look at, I know sequins is a big trend for this year, but this is far to flashy. Good thing she’s wearing such amazing Jewellery! Love the emerald bracelet, I’m sure it must cost a bomb (and a half)!
Jewellery: Platinum watch bracelet with 30.75 carats of emerald, and 21.5 carats of diamonds, a platinum necklace with a 33.24 carat emerald and 15.38 carats of diamonds, and a pair of platinum and 2 carat diamond stud earrings from Cartier.
At no 5: Alright, so she’s not the worst dressed, but considering she was invited to the Oscars, I’d expect better from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, especially since she always looks so lovely at Cannes! Armani could have given her something a lot more flattering, plus the dark brown is soo passe and not at all a red carpet colour! Hmm, lets hope the couple get invited in advance next time!
My Undecided List!
Sandra Bullock looks amazing in the red dress, but some how the look is all too tried and tested. The bustle at the back is not flattering, and the red is a bit too deep a colour for her. Also what happened to her hair? It looks like she got up and tied in in a bun! Not becoming of an American Sweetheart. So this look is a 50/50, not the best dress but not the worst.
Jewellery: Platinum and diamond stud earrings, and vintage platinum and diamond bangles by Harry Winston.
Scarlett Johansson’s little Dolce and Gabbana dress is too risqué for the Oscars, and personally this is not a great colour (onion pink is very difficult to wear). Also she could hardly walk the red carpet in this dress, and it’s no use being uncomfortable at such a huge event. Having said that, I love the tussled crop haircut, some said it’s too messy, but it looks very bed head chic.
