Shahid Kapoor and Mira Kapoor made their first appearance together on national television this weekend for Koffee With Karan. It was a much-anticipated episode, since many people were curious to see what Mira’s like – and, I have to say, I enjoyed it very much. Mira seems like a total chiller, and they look great together. Shahid and Mira also revealed a bunch of things about their love story, which we didn’t know too much about before. In case you missed the show, here’s a recap of the things they said:
When Shahid’s parents first saw Mira…
Shahid’s parents first went to ‘see’ Mira at a family friend’s house over lunch, and she had no idea what was happening – although she did notice Pankaj Kapur and Supriya Pathak there. (Mira said she was sitting with her mom and sister over lunch and bashing Bollywood and item numbers, and they were probably scared because they knew what was happening.) Initially, Mira’s family thought they were there to see her for Shahid’s younger brother, Ruhaan, because of the age factor.
Mira said:
We met through family. Both our families follow the same path, and so do we. Our path is very important to us, and our faith is very important to us. I think that’s a mutual thing between both of us that we respect in each other. That’s what makes us get along.
Why Shahid was open to an arranged marriage…
I had been single for four years. I had looked around enough, wondering if I will find somebody that I will spend my life with. I didn’t find anybody in the people I had around me. […] I was in my 30s and I was like, ‘Okay, I should get married, I should have kids.’ I want all that. My parents separated when I was very young, so it’s something that was very important to me – to settle down, to have a family, to have a solid home. I craved it; I was really lonely. So when they asked if I would like to meet somebody, I was like, why not?
How they met…
Shahid came to see her – on 30th November, he said – and after the families met for a bit, they went to Mira’s friend’s farmhouse to spend time alone and get to know each other.
Shahid said:
The first thing I asked her was, why do you want to marry someone so much older than you? And the first answer she gave me was, why do you want to marry someone who’s so much younger than you? That’s worse! So we started off by addressing the elephant in the room. Then we spent 7 hours talking to each other, and we didn’t even realise it. I was like, I sat in a room with a girl 13 and a half years younger than me and we had nothing in common, and we could talk for 7 hours. That was excellent. I thought that was a great start.
They met about 6-7 times after that, and according to Mira, “things just flowed.”
When they fell in love…
Shahid said:
I think that happened right after she got pregnant. We got very close. We also got a lot of time to spend with each other.
Mira said:
I think pregnancy and having a baby makes ‘you and I’ an ‘us’. It just brings you two together. Especially in an arranged marriage – it just brings you both close in a very special way, because you made something that’s yours together.
Shahid’s thoughts about arranged marriage…
I’m a huge supporter of this arranged marriage format. You come with no expectations, and then if you hit it off, every day gets better than the previous one. The process of falling in love happens after you’re married, which is unlike when you’re in a romantic relationship – you always feel like the peak of the love was in the beginning, because that’s when the rush of love happens. A lot of the times, you look back and wonder when will those days come back. The graph for an arranged marriage is a lot better in the long term.
On problems early on in the marriage…
Shahid said:
In the beginning we had a lot of speed breakers, because we were strangers. And as much as you try to talk and engage with each other, till the time you don’t start living in the same house, you don’t really know who the other person is. So there was a time for a couple of months where there was this huge vacuum, where we were trying to understand how life’s going to be. You’re pretty much always on good behaviour and conscious. The first two months were like that, then it kind of evaporated and everything became smooth.
He then spoke about how her pregnancy helped bring them closer together:
The fact that she conceived early in our marriage brought us together. Relationships are essentially made of partnerships, and in those partnerships you have to have different experiences together. We never had any. We were strangers. That was the first real thing we did together.
On their most annoying habits:
Mira: He burps a lot.
Shahid: She f–
Mira: Shut up! I was pregnant. I’m allowed. What do you have?
