Salman Khan‘s bail continues: no jail for Salman Khan. It’s been a crazy morning.
In a nutshell, the Bombay High Court judge kept on saying to the prosecution and defense throughout the hearing that it is not okay to keep anyone in jail while his plea is being decided in a higher court.
It was brought up by the judge that under normal circumstances, for a sentence under 7 years, a bail is allowed. Since the prosecution failed to produce extraordinary circumstances for this case, the judge has asked Amit Desai (Salman’s lawyer) to ask the accused (Salman) to surrender and has given verbal instructions to the defense to execute a new bail bond. Whether this will result in an extension of bail or a complete suspension of sentence remains to be seen. Salman, who wasn’t in court today, is going to head to the Sessions Court and surrender, apparently.
For now, it looks like there’s no jail for Salman Khan. The sentence has been put on hold till the High Court passes an official order – which may happen sometime in July, when Salman’s appeal is due in the High Court. The judgement for 5 years still stands, despite the fresh bail. The final hearing on the appeal for the suspension of the sentence is in July.
