One of life’s many dilemmas is taking care of yourself. Sometimes we tend to do things that we know are bad for us and yet do them (Yes, I’m talking about skipping a gym sesh). Even though I am aware of how important of a role going to the gym plays, I tend to put it at the back of my mind. At the end of the day, I’m tired and I just want to be a couch potato and binge-watch Netflix. Recently, I found out that I’m not the only who will do anything to avoid the gym. I was scrolling through Malini’s Girl Tribe on Facebook and I noticed that one of the members wanted to know how can one get in shape without going to the gym. Intrigued by this question, I immediately started doing some research. Here are 9 tips to get in shape:

1. Cut Out Invisible Sugar

Ever wondered how many grams of sugar a glass of Pepsi or Coke has? I hate to break it to you but one glass of this drink has approximately 39 gms of sugar! According to the American Heart Association, the daily allowance for sugar is 37.5 gms for men and 27 gms for women. Yikes! Unknowingly, we tend to consume so much sugar and worsen our health. That’s the case with all food products with added sugars. That’s why staying away from food products with invisible sugar (added sugar) will help you get in shape faster.

2. Take A Break From Sitting

Have you ever heard the saying, “sitting is the new smoking”? Well, it’s true. Sitting down for too long puts you at risk of chronic health issues like heart disease, diabetes and cancer. So, if you have a desk job or if you are a student, make sure you get up every few minutes and walk around.

3. Up Your Fibre Intake

As much as I would love eating pizza for every meal, my digestive system would wish otherwise. When your diet is not rich in fibre, you can face health problems like chronic constipation. That’s why make sure you eat enough fruit and vegetable every day.

4. Chug Water Like It’s Your Job

This one shouldn’t come as a surprise. Water helps support various essential bodily functions. It helps flush body waste, regulates body temperature and maintains blood pressure among other things. So, if you want to get in shape, chug some water.

5. Avoid Everything That’s Fried

Eating deep-fried food is like an invitation for extra calories. Eating deep-fried food often can put you at the risk for diabetes, heart disease and obesity. So do your health (and arteries) a favour and stay away from fried food.

6. Be A Mindful Eater

When you’re watching TV while eating food, you tend to eat way faster than usual (the same reason why the popcorn bucket is over before the movie even starts). So when you’re eating your meal, only focus on eating it and don’t do any other activity simultaneously. This small step will help you get in shape quicker than ever.

7. Find A Physical Activity You Love

Even though lifting heavy weight or going on a 5-kilometre jog is not my thing, I love doing online fitness workouts. Here are some that I highly recommend:

Pop Pilates:

Low Impact Cardio:

Ballet Barre:

8. Don’t Compromise On Sleep

You should practise what you preach and trust me I’ve been trying to. These days I’ve been trying to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night and it’s been helping with the way I feel! I feel much more energised and fresh. A good night’s sleep is a must if you want to get in shape.

9. Chill TF Out

Stress can make your hormones go out of balance which can result in weight gain. So try and take up activities like meditation, sports or painting, basically anything that’ll help you calm down.
