I am a proud bookworm, and I know for a fact that the people who love to read, definitely have an overactive imagination! I mean how could they not? How would Harry Potter, Game Of Thrones or even Hunger Games have a huge fan following if we, as book readers, couldn’t imagine how Hogwarts or Westeros would look like, right? So, due to my habit of Bollywood-ising everything, here’s a list of B-town heroines who’d rock it as strong female literary characters.
1) Lisbeth Salander – Kangana Ranaut
Lisbeth Salander is easily one of the fiercest girls I have ever read about and no one else but Kangana Ranaut comes to mind when I think of a Bollywood adaptation. Plus, Rooney Mara and Kangana look so similar. See!
2) Elizabeth Bennet – Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone exudes everything Jane Austen wanted Elizabeth Bennet to look like. Pride, ideals, honesty and overall amazingness. Lizzy and Deepika are like twins in a parallel universe. Lizzy’s elder and more docile sister, Jane could be played by Katrina Kaif.
Deepika and Katrina in the same movie, what a casting coup that would be, eh?
3) Jane Eyre – Parineeti Chopra
Parineeti Chopra would rock as the strong headed feminist Jane Eyre who refuses to be a rich man’s mistress. She marries him only when she’s as rich as he is. Jane literally helps him for the rest of his life at the end of the novel. Jane is perfect and so is Parineeti!
4) Daenerys Targaryen – Alia Bhatt

5) Bella Swan – Shraddha Kapoor
Shraddha has the vulnerability, the looks and the inherent goodness an actress requires to be an innocent Bella Swan. We’d cast Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh as Edward and Jacob respectively, of course.
6) Catherine Earnshaw – Priyanka Chopra
The main protagonist of Wuthering Heights was passionate, wilful and not very easy to please. Who better than Priyanka Chopra could pull off a woman as complicated as Cathy? Who, who?
7) Katniss Everdeen – Anushka Sharma
The winner of the Hunger Games and an icon for many, Katniss Everdeen is a strong hunter who bears and eventually overthrows the totalitarian regime in the Capitol. Anushka Sharma fits the bill perfectly!
8) Scarlett O’Hara – Kareena Kapoor
Vain, shallow and decidedly anti-heroine, are just some of the terms that are often associated with the main character of the epic book/movie Gone With The Wind. Anyone but Kareena Kapoor playing Scarlett O’Hara would be a travesty.
9) Emma Woodhouse – Sonam Kapoor
I mean hello! Go watch Aisha again. I don’t know about the movie but Sonam Kapoor was perfect in Aisha which is a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma.
10) Anastasia Steele – Kriti Sanon
In my Bollywood casting of Fifty Shades of Grey (told you it’s a habit) Kriti Sanon was one of my choices for Christian Grey‘s favourite submissive – Anastasia Steele! She ticks all the boxes when it comes to the main protagonist of Fifty Shades Of Grey!
