Before killing me, just read the title again, especially the words ‘tad bit’. Basically, my expectations from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani were sky high and why wouldn’t they be? It had Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone romancing each other post break up, it had talented actors like Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur playing supporting roles, it had amazing songs and it’s directed by Ayan Mukerji! Sadly, when I watched the movie I was underwhelmed. Here’s why!
1) Love doesn’t mean giving up everything you stand for.
My biggest problem with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was Bunny suddenly giving up everything he stood for after meeting Naina for the second time! They met like after eight years, if she was such an important factor in his life, he could have at least kept in touch.
2) Taran > Bunny
He should have been the hero of this movie! Aditi and Taran were the couple for whom the hashtag #RelationshipGoals was made.
3) Naina’s ‘transformation’.
Honestly, Bunny turns up the charm when he sees Naina like this.
He is good to her when she’s the bespectacled nerd too, but all that love and commitment comes into the fray only when she becomes hot AF, know what I mean?
4) The sense of entitlement Bunny has over Naina.
I mean she’s just talking to Vikram and there he is… threatening to beat up the poor (hot) guy for daring to look at Naina. Let her breathe Bunny, my God!
5) Avi’s underdeveloped character.
I mean he had no back story, just one mention of a father who thought he’s a loser. I know one couldn’t add another story if they want a movie to be under 3 hours, but I really thought a talented actor like Aditya Roy Kapur could have had much more to do except drink and mope.
6) Vikram > Bunny
Seriously, anyone was better for Naina than Bunny. And Vikram looks gooooood!
7) Opposites do attract but do they really last?
Naina and Bunny are diametrically opposite. Their cores are different. Do you think they’ll last? It’s good to be with someone who has nothing similar with you for a while, but forever? I have my doubts on that.
8) More Farooq Sheikh was needed.
Undoubtedly the best part about this movie was Farooq Sheikh‘s wonderful performance as Bunny’s father.
9) Predictable.
As many critics noted, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani looked amazing, but it was so damn predictable! It’s like a pretty girl with no soul.
10) So much talent, such little use!
With a cast as amazing like this – a lot could be done (Read: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara).
I’m saying it again, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was quite enjoyable, just not as enjoyable as I thought it would be. What do you think?
Also – Team MissMalini and MissMalini herself LOVE this movie, I walk a lonely road on this topic.
