Received a wedding invite recently but were you ever so slightly confused about the dress code? Follow our simple guide to answering the age-old ‘what to wear’ dilemma and you’ll be sure to RSVP with style. Welcome to the season of weddings—where lehengas are shiny, dresses are sultry, and the attendees are always wishing they’d put more thought into their wedding ensembles. And like any wedding season, you might probably be attending three or more matrimonial events in a month! So if you have been wondering what to wear and still look trendy – this week, we delve into the best wedding ensembles and accessories, that will have you looking stylish all season long. Because your friend’s wedding may not exactly be about you, but those pictures always have a way of turning up. We promise, it will be a day to remember for the bride and an outfit to cherish for you.
Day 1: The Mehendi
Although the mehendi, as part of a matrimonial event sounds like it would be okay if you put on something not that dressy, but then again, you could be wrong! Weddings in India have become a huge affair and if I were you, this is what I would do. Opt for a high waist lehenga and maybe a gold toned blouse to avoid that “I am soo under dressed” situation. You may or may not wear this with a duppatta to make it look modern yet keeping it traditionally ladylike.
Style Tip: The point of the high waist skirt is for your midriff to show. Make sure your stole doesn’t cover it.
Day 2: Cocktail
Cocktails as a part of Indian weddings are a fairly new concept. However, the growing trend means you’ve got to turn your style game on! From red carpets to promotional events the color red has been trending this season. A high-slit gown in scarlet red for a wedding cocktail could be your ultimate choice. I opted for a sultry red gown by upcoming designer Vidhi Gurnani. Take inspiration below.
Style Tip: A high neckline is unpredictably sexy, especially when paired with pulled back hair, which elongates the neck.
Day 3: Sangeet
Dancing or not dancing, this is the most amusing matrimonial event. A sangeet is the perfect time to channel quintessential Indian style, and a fabulous chance to reveal your inner Deepika Padukone. Remember Deepika’s Dilli wali girlfriend flared pants/shrara style outfit? Now that’s the look you should be going for – something with a fashion-edge!
Style Tip: Break up the proportions and pair your flares with a sequin crop choli. Turn up the volume with a bright, funky color.
Day 4: Wedding & Reception
While weddings in India were once a formal affair, it is becoming increasingly popular to forgo tradition and embrace the carefree – with fashion falling in line. Saris are great to dress in when it comes to weddings, but I suggest you drape yours with a twist! Sparkle like a diamond or stay pretty and simple, the beauty of the sari is found in its ability to be glamorous or understated, yet always effortlessly chic. See how I styled it? If you love it, move over to my video to see how I draped my pant style sari here!
Style Tip: As fancy as it may look, make sure your sari is matching or contrasting well enough with your pants for that unconventional appeal.
