Mumbai’s fashionistas and Bollywood beauties were thrilled to bits as Delhi-based designer, Mayyur Girotra opened his very first boutique in Mumbai on Friday evening amid much fanfare and sparkling champagne.
The designer, who launched his label in 2009, is known in fashion circles as the King Of Jamavar and he counts among his clientelle, stars like Karisma Kapoor, Amrita Rao and Sunny Leone, all of whom attended the opening.
Team MissMalini spoke exclusively to Karisma and Sunny about their love for Mayyur’s designs. Here’s what they told us:
karisma kapoor
Team MissMalini: Tell us about Mayyur and your association with him.
Karisma Kapoor: Mayyur was very excited about his store launch in Mumbai and when he called to invite me, he said that I just had to be there. I find his designs very special because they are opulent and at the same time, very understated. His clothes have a different charm to them and hence, I agreed unconditionally to attend his opening. And here I am!
Team MM: What do you like about Mayyur’s clothes and how are they different?
KK: Even though some of his designs are heavy, they are still understated, like I said. The work is subtle. It’s not too in-your-face and that’s what’s really nice.
Team MM: Where do you see yourself wearing these outfits?
KK: Oh, I would definitely wear them to someone’s sangeet party or a wedding. Like every woman, I also sometimes like to dress up and these designs are ideal for those occasions.
Team MM: Tell us about what you are wearing today. Did you choose this ensemble?
KK: Mayyurr knows the kind of stuff I like to wear. And I like to wear a lot of black and white. So he sent me those options. I liked this one the best. I found it very chic and different. It’s not your typical salwar khameez or a saree. It’s a long black tunic with matte gold detailing and has trousers underneath.
sunny leone
Team MissMalini: Mayyur, tell us about your association with Sunny Leone?
Mayyur Girotra: My association with Sunny started when she was in Delhi to promote Jackpot. She walked the ramp in one of my Indian silhouettes and that’s when we connected and became friends. Since then, I’ve been styling her and dressing her. And it’s been fun. She is one of the purest souls I’ve come across.
Team MM: So what kind of clothes do you like to style Sunny Leone, in?
MG: I love styling her in Indian clothes. I cannot imagine her in any other stuff. I love to see her in those flowy, long anarkalis with a minimalistic touch. In fact, today she was supposed to wear a beautiful saree but unfortunately, she was stuck at a shoot and hence sadly, she could not.
Team MissMalini: Sunny, please tell us about your own personal style.
Sunny Leone: Today, I’m wearing basic black. But I do love rock-and-roll, edgy clothes. I don’t like wearing a lot of pink or fluff and frills. I like a more minimalistic style, which suits my body type properly. I guess my style depends on what is needed of me that day or my mood, that day!
Team MM: What do you like about Mayyur’s clothes?
SL: I love his clothes. Every time my stylist connects with him to plan a look for one of my appearances, they pick out these beautiful clothes which they send for me to wear for events and promotions.
They always fit amazingly and look good on my body. Even things that I feel which might not look good, end up looking amazing.
His stitching and attention to detail impress me and I love that about Mayyur’s craft.
Team MM: Tell us about your upcoming film, Tina & Lolo?
SL: I’m so excited about this film. In fact, I’ve just come from the set. I’ve been shooting all day long. It’s about two girls who are on the run. You should watch the film. It’s real fun. I’m not allowed to talk about the film. I really want to talk about it because I’m so excited but they haven’t given me the green light as yet.
