For the latest episode of Koffee With Karan, Karan Johar brought together his three protégés from Student of the Year, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. The students have been a sort of joint package since the film’s release, and although it would have been nice to see them paired off with others – Alia and Sonam could have been fun – it’s always fun to see these super chill, young actors together. In case you missed the episode, we jotted down 8 of the most interesting and juicy revelations from their conversation. So make sure you catch up!
1. Karan Johar is actually like their teacher
KJo started off the show by telling them that they better do a good job on this show, unlike the first interview they did. Turns out, the three of them were mighty pleased after they first spoke to the media – Varun even said “We were amazing; you don’t know what we’ve done, Alia” – but they were in for a bit of a nasty shock when Karan called to blast them. Apparently, they kept talking over each other and, of course, Karan being the teacher that he is, called them to yell at them. We’re assuming he gave them some tips after that, because in a media interaction closer to the release of Student of the Year, I remember Karan commenting that he had trained them well. Indeed!
2. There was an attraction between Alia and Varun on the sets of SOTY
This is more a question than an actual revelation, because Alia didn’t really complete her train of thought for us to know what she meant. As far as we know, she and Varun weren’t in a relationship, but when asked whether she was attracted to either of them, here’s what she said: “It’s very obvious that both of them are very attractive – and so am I – so it’s true that two good-looking people can never be just good friends. Initially, yes, I did hang out with Varun a lot, because Sid did think I was very young.” Then she went off on a tangent about how Sid treated her like she was a child, so we didn’t get to hear the rest. But, from what we can infer, she and Varun weren’t “just good friends” and they “hung out” in the beginning.
3. Alia started dating early
She started dating in the 6th standard – “but that obviously wasn’t dating, we just used to smile at each other from across the classroom and all.” Her first, real boyfriend was in the 10th standard, and she dated him for two years. And no, she didn’t dump him when she became an actress – turns out he dumped her instead. “He’s a very good person, but he dropped me.”
4. Varun likes someone a lot
He won’t comment on whether he’s single or taken, but he will say only this much: “I like someone a lot; let’s just put it in a mature way. I really like someone a lot, I care about this female deeply. And… we’ll see. I’m young right now.” KJo mentions that she’s not from the movie industry, which makes sense since he had previously said he doesn’t want to date an actress.
5. Sidharth used to date a South African girl
Ooh, this is the first we’re hearing of this. Apparently, Sid used to date a South African model named Nicole Meyer, but things didn’t work out between them. Here’s what Sidharth says: “I think it was distance – she wasn’t from here. She’s gone back. When we were dating it was fun and nice, and I wish she was staying in Bombay, but she’s not.”
6. Parineeti makes Alia insecure
On asked about insecurity, Alia said, “There are times that you do feel insecure, and I feel that’s very important for me, because then I work harder.” When asked who makes her insecure, Alia didn’t hesitate to name Parineeti. “I think she’s fantastic. I think she’s so good that I wish I was that good. She’s so effortless, and her command over the language is something that I love.”
7. Sidharth is really good at puns
When asked what he would do if he woke up one morning and found Sunny Leone in his bed, Sidharth said, “Have breakfast. Sunny side up.” *Hahaha*
8. The students are not very good students
When asked who the president of India is in the quiz section, Varun said Manomhan Singh while Alia said Prithviraj Chavan. Only Sid got it right, although Varun later tweeted to say that he knew the answer, he was just in a hurry so he said something else entirely.
So what did you think of this episode? Juicy or just meh? Fun or annoying to see the students back together again? Is Alia majorly giving off a Kareena Kapoor vibe? Sound off in the comments below…
