The first ever MTVIndia VMAIs (Video Music awards India) was held on Thursday night at Tulip Star in Juhu, and several Bollywood and indie musicians made sure to attend the event! The night saw performances by the likes of AR Rahman, Priyanka Chopra, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Farhan Akhtar, RDB, T Pain and several more. It may be sometime till you can see this show on air, but for all the deets now, read on – here are 10 things we loved from the show!
1. Their passes
I loved the back of their passes – what a fun and creative way to bring across the point that they’re an edgy awards function. You could also see that in the outfits most people wore, too – the typical gowns were ditched either for more casual outfits or more experimental ones.
2. Imran Khan’s jacket
Not every guy can make a pink jacket look great, but Imran Khan – who hosted the show along with Vir Das – looked hella spiffy! He looks great, and also interesting was the fact that he started off hosting the show while wearing colourful PJs and a Tweety Bird tshirt! Guess this was the one function where the host got to start things off really casually. And speaking of casual…
3. Kunal Roy Kapur’s ensemble
*lol* I suppose we already know he’s a Nautanki Saala, but how funny that he chose to throw a jacket on his outfit of a tshirt, shorts and chappals!
4. Priyanka Chopra’s strut
PC won the award for Achiever of the Year and walked on stage to collect it with a major rampwalk-style strut. She was totally working her statement Gauri & Nainika gown, and of course that epic bouffant, which most of you agreed was ‘Hot’! Interestingly she was called on stage to receive her award a second time; I’m guessing because the first time around she said VMIs instead of VMAIs and so they needed to shoot that segment again. (Yes there are retakes in award functions as well!)
5. Ayushmann Khurrana nearly missing his award
So Ayushmann Khurrana was supposed to receive the award for Best Lyrics for Paani Da Rang (along with Rochak Kohli), except that he never went on stage to receive the award! Anu Malik, who was presenting the award, tried to kill time on stage (in a way that only he can), but eventually he left too since no one came to collect it. A few minutes later it was announced that Anu Malik would be returning on stage to present the award, and this time Ayushmann did come to collect it – turns out, he was chilling in his vanity van because no one told him he was supposed to go on stage to take the award!
6. Sonu Nigam’s hair
Sonu won an award for Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin, and as soon as I saw him I exclaimed about his new haircut. It reminds me of his younger days and I think he looks so much better like this. Do you agree?
7. Bappi Lahiri and Jackky Bhagnani’s Gangnam Style
Bappida and Jackky were onstage to present an award when they were asked to dance to the Gangnam Style. Of course Jackky was willing to do it for his film Rangrezz, but the kicker was when Bappi cracked a move too. He didn’t full-out dance to the song (what a bummer), but I’ve gotta tell you, just watching Bappi move to the Gangnam Style was a whole level of hilarity on its own.
8. Anushka Sharma’s look
I loved Anushka Sharma‘s hair and make-up at this event. I think bangs really suit her, and I loved that she went with smokey eyes to complement them. Infact, she’s totally giving me a Zooey Deschanel vibe here; does anyone else see it?
9. Priyanka Chopra’s performance
PC’s performance included several musical genres – like a jazz version of Dhan Te Nan – and she made sure to end it all with a performance of Babli Badmaash from her upcoming film. Unfortunately, she got on stage just around 10pm, and as you know, there’s a 10pm deadline for live shows. So the music had to be turned way down, which was a bit of a disappointment – but the good news is that her moves remained as good as ever and the audio will be fixed for the telecast, so you’ve still got a great performance to look forward to!
10. The stage and effects
Loved the set-up and the effects used during this show – it made all the performances that much better. You’ll see it all in action during the telecast of the function to know exactly what we mean! Keep an eye out for the lights during AR Rahman‘s performance in particular, because that was awesome!
