Olympic medalist, and five-time world champion, Mary Kom is without doubt, role model material for many women in India. It’s interesting to see a film is being made someone that women can look up to. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is producing the film, while his assistant Omang Kumar will direct it. But the question is, is Mary Kom okay with this?
She is totally fine with the film, though she says it took her a while to understand that Omang was serious and not joking. Here’s what she told Mirror:
“Omang has done extensive research on me. We have had long chats when he came down to meet me in Manipur last year. Mujhe laga it was a joke, but later I realised how serious the man was. So yeah, I gave my consent. My husband, Onlear Kom stood by my decision. In fact, he said that it was a great opportunity for me to be portrayed on celluloid. Of course, I shall read the final script. And I shall definitely suggest changes if I feel. I might drop by at the shoot if I am free.”
Meanwhile, Bhansali is very much on the lookout for someone to play her in the film. They’ve not yet decided whether it’ll be an established actress or a new face, but what they’re absolutely certain about is that this person has undergo extensive training to learn boxing, and to understand how Mary carries herself. For this reason, they want to close in on a name in approximately 10 days, so that this person will have enough time to prepare herself.
Here’s a promotional clip that shows the difficult balance between her intensive training, and being a mom.
Who do you think can do justice to a portrayal of the fighting mom Mary Kom??
