So, I have to say this about Kahaani (which I finally watched last night) I was totally impressed that Bollywood appears to be growing up! Riveting plot, gripping story-telling, believable characters and authentic accents. The only bit that bummed me out ever-so-slightly was how it ended. SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read on if you haven’t yet but plan to see it!
I kept wondering how they were going to wrap this thriller up, with the obvious cliche? A Bollywood staple “happy ending”? I had no clue. Until she stabbed the bad guy in the neck with a pencil. I didn’t see that coming, no. I didn’t believe it as much as I would have liked to, yes.
But all in all I still have to give the team props for pulling off a brilliant female lead, yay Vidya Balan! (So female that she’s pregnant in fact!) Stellar supporting cast (here’s looking at you Rana and of course Bob the assassin!) and a non singing-and-dancing big budget Bollywood film. Yes, for that I give you props.
PS. Amitabh Bachchan sings a gorgeous Bengali poem by Tagore for the movie’s soundtrack which Nowshad translated for me to loosely mean, “Even if no one hears your call, walk on anyway.” Listen.
